While Lake Rabun’s dam was completed in 1915, it wasn’t fully impounded until about 10 years later. By 1925 the lake became a haven for many residents of Atlanta.  Today Lake Rabun boasts a thriving community of many diverse residents including many artists and even Coach Dan Reeves.

At an elevation of 1689 feet, with a surface area of 835 acres and 25 miles of shoreline, Lake Rabun is the second largest lake in the six lake chain. While not as large as Lake Burton, Rabun offers water skiing, fishing, and wonderful afternoon cruises.  Nearby Glen Ella Springs InnLouie’s On The Lake, Lake Rabun HotelLakemont Village and The Orchard Golf Club offer the lake community enjoyable amenities for fine dining, shopping, boat rentals, golf and special events.

The surrounding Lake Rabun area supports whitetail deer, red and grey fox, raccoon, bobcats, and a large population of black bear. Wild Turkey and ruffled grouse are also seen in the area. Many hiking trails and local waterfalls are also visited frequently by the lake residents.

The Lake Rabun Association is an active homeowners association for residents and merchants of the Lake Rabun area and sponsors many events throughout the year such as The Rabun Ramble 5k & 10k run, 4th of July fireworks, barbecue and wood boat parade; and the tour of homes.

Georgia Power occasionally ‘draws down’ Lake Rabun so that lake residents have the opportunity to perform new construction and general boathouse and retaining wall maintenance.
